Facilities Sisson School, on East Alma Street, houses 5th-8th grades. There are three separate units. The original building was built in 1954 and has eight classrooms. The upper building was built in 1964 and has eight classrooms and a library. Our newest wing was built in 1992, has nine classrooms with physical science and life science classrooms with state of the art equipment. There is also a computer lab. There is a large grassy area for soccer, softball, etc., and there is a blacktop area for handball, four square and basketball. During 1995-96 more equipment was added. The housekeeping staff, on a daily basis, maintains the buildings after school hours. The maintenance staff maintains the landscaping and the building as necessary. During the summer months, the housekeeping and maintenance staffs work diligently to clear out each classroom and completely clean the rooms and wax floors. There is a painting schedule and classrooms are painted on a rotating basis. Deferred maintenance matching funds and developer fees have continued to help in maintaining the facilities at the level the students, staff and community expect. We take pride in the appearance of our buildings and sites. School Staff There are a total of 17 full-time certificated teachers. We also have two Special Education teachers, and on full-time principal. Teaching assistants are on staff to aide in the classrooms and help with recess supervision. We contract for nursing services, a speech therapist and a school psychologist. We have a Community School teacher for students K-8 located at Mt. Shasta Elementary. On site, is the Challenge Home School and is directed by another certificated teacher. School Climate Positive school-wide activities are an important part of Sisson School. Fifth grade is a self-contained format, which includes band, choir, a science rotation and the DARE Program. 6th 8th teaching is filled with challenging projects that require problem solving, cooperative learning and completed, polished work. This interaction develops relationships between students and teachers. Academic and attendance requirements are set to insure that students are successful. Student successes are celebrated with the Blue Honor Roll (3.5 or higher), White Honor Roll (3.2 3.49) and Citizenship Honor Roll. Birthday certificates and pencils are also given to each student. The Principal has positive student luncheons and lunch with parents by grade level. The activities include field trips, Kidder Creek Environment Camp, music and performing art performances, interscholastic sports, after -school challenge classes, and GATE activities. The success of our children and the success of our programs is a direct result of extensive parent involvement and community support for our schools. Community support comes in many forms, including monetary donations, donations of merchandise, services and discounts for fundraising opportunities, and the contribution of time for our many greatly appreciated volunteers who help on a regular, one time or short term basis. Another area of community involvement is to become a member or attend the meetings/functions of the various district and school site committees and organizations. Some examples for participation are: school board meetings, centers in the classroom, conferences, Site Council, Open House, sports competitions, Back to School Night, chaperones for field trips and dances, Soup Labels for Education, book fairs, the Art Faire, ski program and various fundraisers.
