THE MOLLUSK FAMILY SQUARE DANCE

There’s nothing like being an Oyster Drill
Bore right in and eat your fill
Periwinkle eggs are queer - like Flying Saucers they appear!
Chorus:
Sea shells circle and do-si-do - all join hands and away you go
Bivalves left and Univalves right,
The Mollusk Family is a-dancin’ tonight!

Wentletraps are strange ones too - purple dye they’ll shoot at you
Biggest Gastropods you’ll meet - Australian Trumpets are 2 feet!
Chorus:
Glossy Cowries how you shine no wonder you were money in
Ancient times - Murex shells the Roman’s chose,
Purple dye for the Emperor’s clothes!
Chorus:
Some Cone shells are very rare - their poison stingers do beware!
Bow to your partner turn and then -
Get ready to circle ‘fore the tide comes in!
Chorus:
The prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen were Conches eyes red, yellow & green - and black and purple and even white
Their trumpet sound’s a pure delight!
Chorus:
The Giant Clam lives on a Coral Reef - When you promenade
Just call him Chief! Argonaut and Nautilus where ya goin’?
You smart alec Mollusk keep do-si-doin’
Chorus:
Tusk Shells open at both ends - they have no eyes
Watch out for the fence!
Best Square Dancers on the floor
Cockle kick your feet - and give out a roar!
Chorus:     GO TO TOP

GETTING FOOD WITH HIS FEET INSTEAD!

RIDDLE OF THE HOUSES

Chorus:
Houses moving all around - some are green and white and brown
Some are pointed some are not empty houses on a vacant lot
The Borders left for a better spot (F#m-Em-Em-D)

Periwinkle who are you - why is your house of green and blue?
Why do you move so awful slow - is it becaue your world’s so low?
Chorus:
Cowry with a house of spots - your shiny shingles full of dots
Your fancy door has ripples too - if I came inside I’d call yoo-hoo!
Chorus:
Mr. Limpet’s house so clean - even a keyhole that is keen!
Your doorstep’s always washed and neat - just pointed roofs are on
your street (F#m-Em-Em-D) Chorus:
Chorus:
Some houses have a winding staircase -
Colored sundials trumpet sounds
Shiny ceilings - windows round - walls like pearl in rainbow gowns.
Chorus:
Some houses come with their very own ladder -
No two alike all customed made
Homes like jewels with strange designs - who lives in all these many kinds (F#m-Em-Em-D)
Chorus:
Houses moving all around - some are green and white and brown
Some are pointed some are not empty houses on a vacant lot

THE BEACH HOPPER

INTRO: HOP-HOP-HOP, HOP-HOP-HOP,HOP-HOP-HOP-HOP,
YES HE HOP-HOPS ALL OVER THE SAND.

If you ever go down to the Ocean
And watch all the waves comin’ in
If you look just a little bit closer
You can find something right in the sand
Chorus:
In the sand - in the sand, there’s a hopper that hops, oh so grand!
He has little black eyes and he comes out at night
And he hop-hops all over the sand!

Mr. Beach Hopper love to eat seaweed
In the daytime he’s deep in the beach,
He doesn’t mind waves but the moist sand he craves
One inch long - he jumps clear out of reach!
Chorus:
Well, at night time there’s hundreds of Hoppers
They’ll eat everything they can find!
As they hop ‘long the shore - they eat more and more,
Then dig holes just ‘fore the daytime.
Chorus:
In the sand - in the sand, there’s a hopper that hops, oh so grand!
He has little black eyes and he comes out at night
And he hop-hops all over the sand!       GO TO TOP

THE LITTLE ARCHITECTS

CHORUS:
JELLYFISH CAN TRAVEL - THE OCEAN FAR AND WIDE
ANEMONES, COWBOYS OF THE OCEAN - LIVE NEAR THE RISING TIDE
BUT COUSIN CORAL, THE ARCHITECT DOES THINGS BEYOND BELIEF
HE BUILDS AND BUILDS FOR YEARS AND YEARS, AND ENDS UP WITH A REEF!

CORAL AND ALGAE WORK TOGETHER - IN THE SEA THEIR TIME IS SPENT
WITH CORAL MAKING LIMEY STUFF WHILE ALGAE MAKES CEMENT

CHORUS:

MOST REEFS WE MAKE IN WATERS WARM - NOT FAR FROM THE EQUATOR
OUR BIGGEST ONE, THE BARRIER REEF - BY AUSTRALIA’S COAST WE MADE HER

CHORUS:

OUR REEFS ARE VERY POPULAR - ALL KINDS OF SEA LIFE STAY
BARNACLES - URCHINS - SHRIMPS AND CRABS - AND WORMS COME EVERY DAY

CHORUS:

NOW THERE’S A SPONGE THAT RUINS MY WORK -
THERE’S WORMS THAT TUNNEL THROUGH
AND MY REEF COMES DOWN WITH A THUNDEROUS ROAR -
LIKE THE WALLS OF JERICHO!

CHORUS:

JELLYFISH CAN TRAVEL - THE OCEAN FAR AND WIDE
ANEMONES, COWBOYS OF THE OCEAN - LIVE NEAR THE RISING TIDE
BUT COUSIN CORAL, THE ARCHITECT DOES THINGS BEYOND BELIEF
HE BUILDS AND BUILDS FOR YEARS AND ENDS UP WITH A REEF! GOOD GRIEF!!!

THE SAND DOLLAR’S SONG

There was an Echinoderm that lived in the sea
Just a little Sand Dollar all alone as can be,
But he wandered away from the rest of the gang
And this is the song that he sang:

There’s Sharks and there’s fishes - they’re all after me!
There’s Barnacles - Oysters and Sea Weed so free
But when I’m a skeleton on some distant shore,
They won’t bother me any more.

I went to the West Coast one fine, sunny day
I met some quaint Bivalves that seemed bright and gay
But they grumbled and grumbled ‘bout life on the sea,
So I told them as plain as can be:

Friends, there’s Sharks and there’s fishes botherin’ you and me
There’s Barnacles - Oysters and Seaweed so free
But when we’re together on some distant shore
They won’t bother us any more!

Well, by now you might think that our life is sad
But think of the boys and girls we make so glad
When they walk by the seashore and we catches their eye
And if they listen close  - they’ll hear us sigh (mmmm!)

Gosh, I’m sure glad you found me here close by the sea
And there’s hundreds of shells - such a var-i-e-ty!
But always remember - don’t ‘cha take me away
An Echinoderm once had quite a day - yeah (Repeat 3 times) GO TO TOP

The Octopus Song

Hello - hello - hello - hello - hello - hello - hello
I'm the octo-octo-octo-octo pus!
I live-I live-I live-I live-I live-I live-I live
Not far from yummy crabs - ummmm delicious!

It gets prety tiresome with so many feet (or is it arms?)
And it's so unnecesary to repeat-repeat-repeat (there I go again!)

A lobster-lobster-lobster-lobster
Go me by the arm-arm-arm
And he better le me go-go-go-go-go!
Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-now that is quite enough
My suction cups will capture you ho-ho!

Now my cousin squid and I
Can release an inky fluid
Change our colors when in danger
All we do is do-id do-id do-id

The other day I had - I had a battle-battle-fight
With another octo-octo-octo-pus
He wouldn't let me-le me have a yum delicious clam
He was very-very-very-very jealous!

So I chased him from my hiding place
He left fast as he could
Oh-here comes my lunch a scallop - ummmm their good!

So now you know a little
Why don't you find out more
Do you know how big-how big-how big we grow to?

So long - so long - so long - so long
Do you think I'm still a monster?
If you answer that where will you have to go to?  GO TO TOP

OCEANOGRAPHY

Chorus:
What's in the future
The future of the ocean - of Oceanography?
With men like Cousteau who explore below,
The "Inner Space Men" of the sea-e-e-e
The Inner Space Men of the sea

The sea could give the world food a-plenty
and water and metals rare
We could farm the sea aquanauts to be
With a bathyscaph search everywhere-ere-ere-ere
With a bathyscaph search everywhere.          (Chorus:)

One idea is to float an iceberg - maybe to L.A.
The currents could bring this great big thing
All the way to Antarcticay-ay-ay-ay
All the way to Antarcticay.                             (Chorus:)

Have you heard of "Mohole" - a science exploration
Drilling the ocean floor?
Getting samples of earth five-hundred feet down
But the drill must dig nine miles more-ore-ore-ore
The drill must dig nine miles more.

Chorus:
What's in the future
The future of the ocean - of Oceanography?
With men like Cousteau who explore below,
The "Inner Space Men" of the sea-e-e-e

THE PHYLUM ARTHROPODA

Chorus:    I come from the phylum Arthropoda
                 I'm Pagurus, samuelis and,
If you're not scientific - you can't be specific
                 When you classify me understand!

Now I'm constantly looking for houses
Hey! There's a shell just my size
And I better go get it  -  or I'll soon regret it
'Cause I'll have to fight ten other guys.       (Chorus:)

They call me the "Clown of the tidepools"
'Cause I fight and I play all the time
I look kind of silly - as I walk willy-nilly
And a snail diner's always just fine!
(Chorus:)

Oh, I'm growing too big for this snail shell
But what can a hermit crab do?
I'll get one gigantic - but the searching is frantic
Other hermit crabs want big ones too.
(Chorus:)

Now this is the end of my story
My shell is 'bout three stories high
If I ever get bigger - they'll have to deliver
A conch shell from the Philippine I-lands...

Chorus:    I come from the phylum Arthropoda
                 I'm Pagurus, samuelis and,
If you're not scientific - you can't be specific
                 When you classify me understsand!

WHAT MAKES THE TIDES?

Chorus:    The tides rush in - the tides rush out
Two times a day they make their route
One is high - the other low
What makes the oceans act just so?

Three quarters of our planet Earth is bulging-changing ocean
Our planet spins and wobbles and shakes
And set the tides in motion                           (Chorus:)

Lifting-falling-rising-dashing - waves comeflowing - spuming
Churning - turning-splashing-crashing
Waves forever booming                               (Chorus:)

Pulling-tugging-bending lugging - gravity is the king
The moon and the sun cause tides to run
In Winter-Fall-Summer and Spring

Chorus:    The waves rush in - the waves rush out
Two times a day they make their route
One is high - the other low
What makes the oceans act just so?

KING NEPTUNE

Chorus:
Ahoy I'm King Neptune and I live in the sea
And I'll tell you of fishes and plants growing free
I've been here for some years now
So I know them quite well
So listen - and to you I will tell:

1. Now my Blue Whale's the biggest I'vre got in the sea
And as for sea serpents - well that's a myth just like me
Now my Dolphins and Porpoises are often confused
So listen and I'll tell you the news
2. Now let's take the Porpoises by bubbles I say
Their fins are triangular and they just love to play
The Dolphin's fins dorsally curve quite a lot
And let's see what was it I forgot?                    (Chorus:)
3. Now, the word's out that starfishes are fish!
And a flying fish flies - and I wish oh, I wish
That instead of Octopuses - you'd say Octopi
And a Lungfish has lungs so do I!
4. Now my plants and my flowers are my own pride and joy
I rsided them from this high...ahoy lads, ahoy
They help hide my fishes when a bad one comes by
And there's kelp salad and yummm...sargassum pie!  (Chorus:)
5. Well, you heard of my story of the fish in the sea
So now, bless my barnacles - I hope you will be
A bit more seaworthy - since I told you my tale
Now, I must be off - here comes my whale

Chorus:
Ahoy I'm King Neptune and I live in the sea
And I'll tell you of fishes and plants growing free
I've been here for some years now
So I know them quite well
So listen - and to you I will tell.
