The Big Beautiful Snows of 1999

Links to photos and related journal entries are at the end of the text.

There were three big beautiful snowfalls at our elevation in February and early March that accumulated to a depth of a foot or more. The first fell on February 6 and totaled 18 inches. Denise and family, luckily were here to enjoy that one. You can see photos of it with the account of their visit. The next was on February 20 & 21 and accumulated to over a foot. The final big snowfall was on March 8 and again totaled over one foot. I've selected a few representative photos of these snows to give you some idea of why we enjoy winter as much as any season up here.

Lots of snow at this level means huge amounts at higher elevations. We found out just how huge when we took a ride up Everitt Memorial Highway on March 2nd to where the plows stop at Bunny Flat. Our house guests, Janet and Glen Hubbard were with us and you can see photos of that experience with the account of their visit.

On March 7th, just before our last big snowfall, Jennie and I tossed the snowshoes in the Jeep and went back to Bunny Flat for some alpine aerobic exercise. It was a flawless day with a sky so vividly blue that Mount Shasta's stark whiteness seemed to slice into it. The photos from that day gives a hint of the intensity of that combination and why the experienc clears the mind and lifts the soul.

Well we thought March 7th would be our last big snowfall, but the first week in April set a record for the month when we had 3 snows of over 8 inches at town level. So on the 7th of April we Jeeped back to Bunny Flat on another exquisite day to shoe through a fresh coating of 2 feet of real powder snow. This would indeed be our last snowshoe outing of the season and a gorgeous one it was as you can see by the three photos linked below. It had truly been a beautifuly snowy winter, but now we were ready for spring and the green grass and colorful flowers it brings to the mountains.
