Highway 299W in the area of the fire is OPEN, . The road may be open to one-way pilot car escort from time to time for maintenance due to falling Rocks, etc.. The LOMA FIRE is 100% containted. Monday, September 22, 2003-- 100% contained, 3750 acres burned, personnel today aobut 600 (down from peak of 1200). Weather in fire area about 90F, wind 5 mph from the N/E. -

HIGHWAY 299W is OPEN, with closures and ONE-WAY TRAFFIC as required for maintenance in fire area.

Coverage of the LOMA FIRE will now wind-down at TrinityCam, unless there is a significant change in the status of the fire. CHECK USFS USFS fire condition page for further daily updates!

Sunday , September, 21, 2003- 1800hrs-- Containment is expected today or Monday on the now 3000 acre fire. This fire is on both sides of the Trinity River. The fire is aproxiamately 75% contained. The estimate of total size of fire including areas within the fire perimeter that is not engulfed will be about 5,000 acres. There are a few ranches and cabins, mostly near the French Creek area that have been in danger, but seem to be OK for now. . Since the fire activity seems to be winding down and it is the weekend/Sunday, less information is availiable to report to you..

The CHP website does not show the stuatus of 299W for first time in days. The STATUS of 299 is OPEN with pilot cars escorting one-way traffic when necessary through the fire area.


Saturday, September 20, 2003- HWY 299 is open today with ONE WAY pilot car escorted travel, subject to closure related to fire fighing actvity. The USFS reports the fire about 65% contained today. Still over a thousand fire personnel on scene. .). Four ranches and isolated cabins threatened in the French Creek drainage. Highway 299 is open today with a pilot car escort required. Highway may be intermittently closed throughout the day due to hazards from rolling rocks and burning debris. Fire is projected to reach 5,000 acres

The burn-out continues on North and North/East sections of the fire, as fire crews continue to extinguish and "mop-up" the fire. Wind is less than 5 mph, with temperature in mid-eighties at the fire area. Full containment is projected for Sunday, September 21st. .


Friday, September 19, 2003 (1800hrs) -- For those of you that like numbers, the fire is about 45% contained, about 1200 folks assigned to the fire, and this evening the air quality is very poor, little wind at Weaverville, so the smoke hangs in the valley. 299W is closed overnight... with next evaluation of conditions at 0800hrs. Check the Redding CHP / CLICK on "Lane Closure" for latest information. NEXT update aprox 1000hrs.

A Detailed USFS MAP shows detailed information on fire location shows the steep terrain the fire is in on both sides of the Trinity River.

The next update is projected for aproxiamately 1000hrs. Helicopters are heard in Weaverville Skies, but poor air quality makes it impossible to see them through the TrinityCam Webcam that looks North at the mountains. Pilots report that the ground is not visible from 200' in almost the entire area of the fire...


Thursday, September 18, 2003 (1615hrs) - The fire has passed the 2000 acre mark, with variable winds at 0-12mph from the S/W. About 1200 personnel are involved with the fire. Three dozen Hand Crews, 30 Engines, 15 Water Tenders, and 3 Bulldozers. The temperature is in the 80s in the fire area.

North, South, South/East, North/East movement of the fire, mostly within the "burn-out" area where there have bee fires started to burn-out the fuel (brush/trees,etc) that the fire needs to spread.

The Fire is still on both sides of the Trinity River in the Del Loma and Big Bar Area. This will result in future errosion problems and unhappy fish, wildlife and people..

The road remains closed with some escorted one-way traffic.when open, usually 30 minute wait. The status of the roadway will be evaluated again at 6PM(1800hrs), with possible limited opening. This situation changes around the clock.

The air quality in the Weaverville area is declining with smoke in the air, caused by the fire and lack of wind. There is little if any breeze this morning. You can see it for yourself through the TrinityCam Webcam.

What a difference a day makes...

Wednesday, September 17, 2003 (1200hrs) - Fire size is now at 1500 acres with containment projected as Saturday, September 20th. About 900 people working on the fire. N/E winds at about 0-10 mph at scene. Aproxiamately 8 helicopters, dozen water tenders, 30 handcrews 2 bulldozers, 16 fire engines. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

N/E winds at Weaverville, and reduced smoke from fire have inproved air quality and can be seen in TrinityCam Webcam.

The fire will continue going North, areas have been cleared by burning, establishing boundaries at the South and South/East that the fire will burn to but not beyond.

. Tuesday, September 16, 2003 (2005hrs)- Highway 299W is CLOSED, when it is open, one-way pilot car traffic every 30 minutes or so, when It will be closed for reasons related to the fire suppression. (800) 427- 7623 - California Highway Road Conditions> number may be of assistance too.. The fire is roughly 450 acres with less than 10 percent contained at the end of day Tuesday, Fire is projected to spread northeasterly and reach 1,400 acres in size. .

The heavy smoke that has loomed in the Valley is slightly reduced depending on winds. Noticeable reduction in TrinityCam image at Weaverville today.

Eight residences and one motel unit were threatened within the community of Del Loma. Two vehicles have been destroyed parked near HWY 299W..


Monday, September 15, 2003 (Summary until 20:00 hrs) Highway 299W may be closed for the night from Big Bar to Hayden Flat. (Use other LINKS and Phone Numbers above to verify if you are traveling on 299W)

When open 30 minute one-way traffic. Visibility in Fire Area is poor, and fire attack bombers can not safely fly. Choppers are also restricted. Helicopter base is set up at Weaverville Airport . Hopefully at first light, flying weather will be improved. Winds have been variable 5 to 25 MPH.

INITIAL REPORT-

Sunday, September 14, 2003, Aprox 1600hrs- 4 PM... Dispatch from Trinity Control reported as vegitation fire East and West of Del Loma, at edge of highway 299W. First on scene immediately call for assistance and plans start for major fire. Variable winds had the fire on both sides of the river. The fire was burining generally N/E.
