You can Drive West on State Highway 299 from Redding, passing through Old Shasta, winding your way to Buckhorn Summit, and then about mid-point to Weaverville, you Will see the signs to Lewiston. This Historic Town has many river oriented businesses.
Returning to Highway 299, and going Westward towards Weaverville, you can exit at Steelbridge Road, and discover the Trinity again near the end of the road. There is a nice place to stop and view the river, with parking, day use and a trailhead nearby. There is a place to launch a small boat too. You can see what appears to be a railroad bridge support that is part of Trinity's rich Gold Rush History.
If you rejoin, 299 and travel about 15 minutes Westbound, you will see the river again in the Douglas City Area as It passes under the bridge, it starts through a canyon with many stretches good for "drift fishing" . It remains out of sight from the highway until you reach Junction City. You can see the mining tailings throughtout the area that remind the visitor that the mountains above contain the remants of the famous La Grange Gold Mine.
I The river paralells the Highway for quite a ways, often a stone's throw away as you pass Big Flat, Big Bar enroute to Willow Creek and beyond. As you get closer to Burnt Ranch it disappears into deep canyons.

Salmon June to October, Steelhead/Trout Year around- Very active in November/December. (See F&G regulations for restrictions on the river each year!
There are big brown trout hiding in the river, and lots of rainbow-brown trout too. Many pilgrims come in search of the Salmon-Steelhead holy grail each year. Chinook and Coho salmon can be found in growing numbers each year again with September being a good time to start. If you can not get there in time, steelhead are there even in December, and beyond.
There are many places along the Trinity to fish. The "Special Fly Fishing Only Area" in Lewiston on the river are always fun for those who like to Fly Fish.

Year around fishing, check your regulations each year for changes.
This is the largest lake in Trinity County, was called Trinity Lake, then Clair Engle Lake, then Trinity Lake. It has always been Trinity Lake to the Locals. You can catch several kinds of fish in this lake, Bass (large and small mouth), Catfish, Trout (Rainbow, Brown, Kokanee and mixes), and the occasional beer can or sneaker.
The lake is fed by many streams, and they have some good little spots to fish, but the terrain is often rough to positon yourself for working those areas. I have always liked Stewarts Fork, but the variable amounts of run-off from the snowpack has made it disappointing.
The lake is open year-around, you never have to worry if you have stumbled into the wrong part of the river with the wrong type of tackle.

Sapphire Lake in the Trinity Alps and other pristine lake
It is not a picnic to get to some of these lakes, but many are very accessible. Certainly a well planned trip with the proper boots, pack and supplies will bring you to some of the most spectacular views in the Western United States. Remember, the pack gets heavier as the trip progresses, and do not forget your camera.
There are about 45 odd lakes to choose from, check with some of the written guides and certainly consider the services of a professional guide for your trip. I have been told by those that have been, that there are Brookies, Browns, and Rainbow's that look like Rainbows.
If you do not make it to one of the "Alpine" lakes, atleast purchase a picture postcard with one of the beautiful lakes and environs on it or download a picture from our gallery. Then you can look at it until next year.

Trout all year around!
I think the trout are bigger there, the place seems to be full of trout food, that they often prefer over my best bait, lures and flies. There are all kinds of trout there, Rainbow, Brown and Brook (I have never caught one there, but others have, I am not sure when).
Water from Trinity Lake is released into this lake as part of the politics and management of the water that eventually ends up in Southern California swimming pools and hopefully turns a few electrical turbines along the way.
Lots of things flying and landing on the water, match the ones in the hatches, repel the ones landing on your neck. The Lewiston Area is the acknowleged Super Fly-Fishing Area in Trinity (read the F&G Rules for restrictions).Check out the "Special Fly Fishing Only Area" on the Trinity River nearby. Read the F&G regulations carefully for boundaries and other restrictions. Visit the local tackle shops and stock up on the right assortment of flies and bait.
Lewiston Fishing Deck has handicapped access, parking and rest room.

Fishing and Recreation on Ruth Lake and Area - Map of Secret Fish Locations -
The local Mad River Hatchery, plants trout in Ruth Lake that along with the native Bass, Perch Catfish, Rainbow Trout and Crappie that are abundant in Ruth Lake. The Mad River feeds the Lake and adds to it's fishing challenges. Ruth Lake is located at the upper end of the Mad River. The lake is located in Southern Trinity County on Highway 36. 36 extends from roads thata access Highway 5 in Tehema and Shasta Counties ..travels through Southern Trinity County to the Humboldt County Coast Highway. The fishing is reasonably good year-around, but all agree that it is best in the wintertime and very good in the Spring. The Lake is about 5 miles long, and there are plenty of places to fish, and never very crowded except during some of the local Summer Events like the Rodeo, etc.
