CULTURE

Looking for a little break from the great outdoors? Look no farther than nearby Redding. With a population of approximately 75,000, Redding offers the usual spectrum of entertainment: shopping malls, night clubs, movie theaters, miniature golf, bowling alleys and dining.

A number of fairs and community festivals are held throughout the year. In spring, for example, the Shasta Jazz Festival draws fans from across the nation, and Kool April Nites is a three-day showcase of classic cars.

Also in the late spring is the annual Redding Air Show, one of the largest displays of military aircraft on the west coast. Count on the US Air Force Thunderbirds or US Navy Blue Angels to make a spectacular appearance.

Museum buffs have plenty to choose from, as well. The Carter House Natural Science Museum is located in Redding's Caldwell Park by the Sacramento River. The museum features 37 species of live animals, many of which children may handle, and a number of rotating displays and exhibits. Also in the park is the Redding Museum of Art and History, featuring painting,
sculpture, ceramics and photography.

North Valley Art League and Shasta County Arts Council also operate galleries in downtown Redding; admission is free.
