   Consider the unloved paint scraper
Scrapers are essential in my opinion. I make my own handles and grind them specially too. I don't particularly like extra wide ones much. Whattami, Popeye the Sailor? A couple inches wide is about as much as I want to pull.

Here are some blanks in various woods laid out.

I like longer than stock handles. 

Next, cut out on a bandsaw

 

A drawknife wastes stockfast!

 

Next a spokeshave

  On to the hand scraper, saves sanding and a whole lot of dust cleanup. Shavings you can sweep!

I grind the edges slightly different. One I cut more concave for deeper cuts and the other less concave for finishing. I kill the corners regardless.
