Email No. 3: Wed, 06 Nov 2002

Hello!

This email is not going to be nearly as long as it should be, but our celebrations after finding out our sites went longer than I expected and I need to be getting home before dark.

So... I know where my site is! My site is supposedly a really rural one, in the deep southern region of Tanzania called Mtwara. I am in the very middle of two towns, Masasi and Newela. The nearest village to me is called Lulindi, but so far, I haven't been able to find that on a map. It's actually in one of the hardest regions of Tanzania to get to.. if we weren't flying there for site visits on Saturday, after a 10 hour long bus ride to Dar es Salaam, it would be taking me four days to get there from Arusha instead of the three that it is going to take. Kind of crazy.

I do know that it is in a hilly/mountainous region, rural, and an ALL GIRLS school of about 320 students. I am really really looking forward to the all girls aspect, as I feel that would be a very special and rewarding environment for me to be in. We'll just have to wait and see.

I will write another email once I get back from my site visit next week. I can only imagine now what stories I will have to tell after a week of traveling.
