THE SIERRA CLUB FOUNDATION APPLICATION FOR
HORSE CAMP CARETAKER

 

Job Description

  • caretake Shasta Alpine Lodge and the surrounding wilderness campground
  • keep accurate records and collect donations
  • educate climbers and other visitors
  • distubute environmental education materials and
    lead a daily "climbers' briefing"
  • provide first aid and assist with communication in emergencies
  • uphold and follow guidelines established by Horse Camp Committee
  • current First Aid and CPR certifications required
  • hepatitis B vaccination required
  • ability to do heavy lifting required
  • daily stipend of $80

Every year The Sierra Club Foundation hires highly qualified seasonal staff to caretake the Shasta Alpine Lodge and the surrounding backcountry campground. Caretakers work in 24-hour shifts with time off during the day (Thursdays through Sundays) and provide their own food. Monday through Wednesday shifts will often be shorter. Cooking facilities are available in the Lodge. The Foundation is looking caretakers for the late May through September season. Scheduling will be finalized after hiring is complete. We are looking for applicants who demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and motivation. Knowledge of backcountry camping and mountaineering is desirable. Students interested in internship or research options may make email inquires. Caretakers must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as cooperatively as a member of a team. Candidates should demonstrate the interest and ability to contribute to The Sierra Club Foundation's public service efforts on Mt. Shasta.
